Charles Clement
CEO & Master Instructor
Charles Clement grew up in Ormstown, a small farm town just southwest of Montreal. At the age of 10, he began watching professional golf on TV. Nicklaus, Palmer, and Watson were the legends he saw dominating the leaderboards in those early days. Their prowess on the course deeply inspired him.
When Charles started high school, he met a couple of guys who played golf, and they encouraged him to give it a try. He hadn’t even realized that he lived only five miles from the Ormstown Golf Club. Once Charles picked up the game, he fell in love with it instantly. Within six months, he had a 2 handicap; within a couple of years, he was a scratch golfer, winning tournaments. One of his proudest achievements was winning the men’s club championship at Ormstown three years in a row as a teenager.
By age 18, however, Charles started experiencing back problems. Initially, these episodes would last only a few days, but after he turned pro in his early 20s, the pain began to linger for weeks. He asked many of his fellow pros for advice, but the typical response was, “That’s part of the game. We all have aches and pains, and a lot of us deal with back problems.” Accepting this as his reality, Charles sought out a top-notch chiropractor, who helped immensely.
While working as an assistant golf professional at a private club near Montreal, Charles met Moe Norman for the first time. Ironically, that week Charles couldn’t swing a club because his back was out. At first, he wasn’t impressed with Moe. He was short, overweight, had bad teeth, and talked funny. Moe demonstrated his skills on the 10th tee, with about 40 of the club’s most dedicated members watching. He started with his wedge, then moved to his favorite 4-wood, and finally to the driver. Every shot was executed flawlessly, displaying power and precision. After successfully hitting several drivers straight down the fairway. Charles’s head pro asked him to hit some ground shots with the driver. Moe struck those balls as if they were teed up, which was truly remarkable. At that moment, those were the best driver shots anyone had ever seen. Then Moe rolled a ball into a divot. Many spectators moved closer to see the next shot. Moe did not disappoint. His shot out of the divot was the most incredible they’d ever witnessed, high and dead straight. The crowd was in awe of the extraordinary display. Moe proved to all of us that day that he was the greatest ball striker in the world. The next day, Charles asked his head pro, “Why aren’t we teaching Moe Norman’s swing?” The answer he got was one he’d hear repeatedly: “Nobody can swing like Moe Norman—only he can.”
After a couple more years, Charles was forced to give up golf professionally; every time he played, his back would flare up. He had to let go of his dream of being a pro player. A few years later, his cousin called and offered him an opportunity to start teaching the game. Charles knew a lot about technique but had never really taught anyone the golf swing. He worked with his cousin, Shawn Clement, an ambidextrous scratch golfer who played both left- and right-handed. Shawn would explain the intricacies of the swing and talk about the perfect technique. Charles tried Shawn's new method, but he was still twisting his lower back and struggling with pain. Charles and Shawn began using high-speed cameras. Like many golfers, the first time Charles saw his swing on video, he hated it—the camera revealed every flaw. He could see how much he was compressing and twisting in his lower back. After a few months of working on his swing with video analysis, his cousin brought in a new video: it was Moe Norman.
The name of the video was "Pipeline Moe Norman: The Greatest Ball Striker in the World." Within a couple of weeks of analyzing Moe’s swing, Charles and Shawn quickly realized that his technique was exceptional. There was no twisting—Moe created a larger swing arc and could hit the ball dead straight. Remarkably, despite hitting more balls than anyone else, Moe Norman never suffered from back problems or any other serious injuries.
Charles immediately decided to change his swing to emulate Moe’s. He figured it would take 6 months to a year to get it. The problem was that they needed to figure out how Moe's unique technique worked because it was fundamentally different from what they had been teaching. The fundamentals of the conventional golf swing didn’t explain Moes golf swing. Charles realized that this was an incredible opportunity to figure out the perfect golf swing of Moe Norman and to change the way golf is taught and played worldwide. They looked at Moes swing as if it were a puzzle, trying to figure out every piece. They would joke around and say, ‘I found the last piece of the puzzle, but it was just another piece. The biggest obstacle was overcoming the brainwashing from everything they were taught about the flawed conventional fundamentals. After six months of working hard on figuring out a lot about Moe swing, the December issue of Golf Digest magazine had Moe Norman on the cover. The title was ‘ Moe knows what nobody else knows’. They thought this was it. The game of golf is gonna change sooner than they thought. A new golf company called Natural Golf wrote the article detailing how Moe’s swing worked and why it’s the future of golf technique. Unfortunately, the article fell way short of expectations. None of the discoveries they had made were in the article. It was a dud. It didn’t let us know what ‘ Moe knows what nobody else knows’. Natural Golf even wrote some books on Moe’s technique. They were all very disappointing.
Natural Golf tried to hire Charles and Shawn. Charles made them an offer: he would work for them if he were the Head Instructor, because they had no idea how Moes swing worked. They laughed in his face, and Charles left them by saying, “Natural Golf may have money, but you don’t understand his technique, and you have a bunch of unprofessional clowns running it.”
Charles was done with Natural Golf. At this point, he believed he was ahead of everyone in solving Moe’s perfect swing, so the work continued and took several years—much longer than they anticipated—and naturally, there was plenty of debate over who had the correct interpretation.
After about five years, Charles believed he had finally figured it out: the greatest golf swing in the world, how and why it worked, and why everyone should be teaching it. Unfortunately, Charles and his cousin eventually parted ways; Shawn went back down the rabbit hole and returned to the conventional swing, but Charles couldn’t go back. He no longer wanted to teach a method that could injure people, so he essentially retired from golf once again.
Charles and Shawn had big dreams of changing golf for the better, but what they received instead was a lot of negativity from fellow pros. Charles got married, had a son, changed his career path, and occasionally played golf, still dreaming of sharing what he’d learned about the swing. Yet, it never quite happened—until now.
At 58 years old, Charles believes his theory on Moe’s swing is the final chapter in golf swing evolution. With the help of his son Hunter, his wife Donna, and his friends Stephen and Ron, he is hopeful that this time, they can finally make a positive impact on the wonderful world of golf.
